Monsoon India & Kashmir Birding Tour – is a 16-day guided birdwatching journey across some of India’s most diverse habitats, from the lush Western Ghats and monsoon grasslands of Rajasthan to the breathtaking high-altitude forests of Kashmir. Timed perfectly for the monsoon season, this tour targets some of India’s most sought-after and range-restricted species, including Lesser Florican, Forest Owlet, and a suite of Himalayan specialties such as Kashmir Nuthatch and Orange Bullfinch.

Arrive in Mumbai, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Depending on arrival times, there may be a short introductory briefing followed by light birding in nearby green spaces. This is a relaxed start to recover from travel while getting familiar with common urban and coastal species. Overnight in Mumbai.
After breakfast, drive to Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the northern Western Ghats. This region is one of the key sites for the critically endangered Forest Owlet. Afternoon birding will focus on dry deciduous forest and woodland habitats, where we may encounter species such as Vigors’s Sunbird, woodpeckers, and various forest passerines. Overnight near Tansa.
A full day dedicated to exploring Tansa’s diverse habitats. We will carefully search for the Forest Owlet, one of India’s most sought-after endemic species, along with other Western Ghats specialties. The mix of forest edges and open patches provides excellent birding opportunities throughout the day. Overnight near Tansa.
Enjoy a final morning birding session at Tansa before driving to Pune. As we move into the Deccan plateau, the habitat shifts to open grasslands and scrub. If time permits, we will explore nearby grasslands in the evening, preparing for the next day’s key targets. Overnight in Pune.
A full day in the grasslands around Pune, one of the best areas for monsoon specialists. Our main target is the Broad-tailed Grassbird, often seen displaying during this season. Other grassland birds and monsoon breeders will also be sought in these productive habitats. Overnight in Pune.
Take a morning flight to Jaipur and continue by road to Ajmer. If time allows, we will begin exploring nearby grasslands and scrub habitats in the evening. Overnight in Ajmer.
A full day dedicated to the monsoon grasslands around Ajmer. This is prime habitat for the spectacular Lesser Florican, known for its unique display flights during the breeding season. We will also search for Rock Bush Quail and other regional specialties in the dry scrub and grassland mosaic. Overnight in Ajmer.
Morning birding in Ajmer before driving to Ranthambore. In the afternoon, we explore dry forest and rocky terrain in search of Painted Spurfowl and other woodland species. Overnight in Ranthambore.
After a final morning birding session, return to Jaipur for your flight to Srinagar in Kashmir. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel or traditional houseboat. Overnight in Srinagar.
Begin exploring the stunning Himalayan landscapes of Kashmir. Birding will focus on high-altitude forests and valleys, targeting species such as Kashmir Flycatcher, Kashmir Nuthatch, and Kashmir Nutcracker. The scenic beauty of the region adds to an already exceptional birding experience. Overnight in Srinagar.
Another full day exploring different habitats, including conifer forests and alpine edges. We will search for Orange Bullfinch and a variety of Himalayan specialties, while also enjoying the rich diversity of birdlife in this unique region. Overnight in Srinagar.
Our final day in Kashmir allows us to revisit key sites or target any remaining species. The combination of high-altitude birding and dramatic scenery makes this a highlight of the tour. Overnight in Srinagar.
Fly from Srinagar to Delhi. In the afternoon, we explore wetlands and grasslands around the city, targeting species such as Indian Grassbird and Bristled Grassbird. Overnight in Delhi.
Morning birding around Delhi, with the possibility of searching for rare species depending on recent sightings. We then travel to Haldwani, stopping at Haiderpur Wetland to observe waterbirds, storks, and other wetland species. Overnight in Haldwani.
Enjoy a final morning birding session in the Haldwani area before returning to Delhi. This marks the conclusion of the main birding program. Overnight in Delhi.
